December 11th | 3:00-5:00pm Eastern
Online via Zoom
$30

This TreeLearn session will explore regional approaches to fuels management and their impact on wildfire behavior and policy across the U.S. Participants will hear from experts representing the West, Southeast, and Eastern regions as they share insights into effective management strategies, challenges, and opportunities for improving wildfire resilience through science-based practices and collaboration.

Presented by:

Dr. Scott Stephens, Professor of Fire Science, University of California, Berkeley
Dr. Stephens is a certified Senior Fire Ecologist and co-director of the Center for Fire Research and Outreach at UC Berkeley, where he also leads the Stephens Wildland Fire Science Lab. His research examines historic, current, and future fire regimes and their influence on policy, people, and ecosystems. A Fulbright Fellow and one of the Top 1% of Researchers Worldwide in 2024, Dr. Stephens has testified on fire and forest policy before the U.S. Congress, the White House, and multiple state agencies. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Climate Wildfire Institute and co-leads The Stewardship Project, a collaboration between Indigenous communities and western science to improve federal fire policy.

John McGuire, Private Lands Prescribed Fire Initiative Director, Tall Timbers, Inc.
John McGuire holds a Master’s in Fire Science from Auburn University and is a certified burn manager in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. With over three decades of experience in southeastern forest management, John’s work bridges private and non-profit sectors. His current efforts focus on expanding prescribed burning on private lands and removing barriers that limit its use as a critical forest management tool.

Kyle Magdziuk, Prescribed Fire Coordinator and Game Bird Biologist, Tall Timbers, Inc.
Based in the Delaware–Maryland–Virginia region, Kyle Magdziuk promotes safe and effective prescribed fire use through research, outreach, and training. His work emphasizes quail habitat restoration and the integration of fire with mechanical treatments in diverse fuel types and land ownerships. Kyle began his career with Tall Timbers in 2019 after earning his master’s degree from the University of Georgia and bachelor’s in wildlife management from SUNY Cobleskill. His presentation will focus on fuel mitigation strategies tailored to the Delmarva Peninsula’s unique fire ecology and collaborative landscape.
